Black Friday is the next day after Thanksgiving and represents the unofficial start of the Christmas season. That has been the tradition since the 19th century, when President Abraham Lincoln chose the last Thursday in November as Thanksgiving. One key moment in the history of this day was the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, which boosted sales for the next day. Thanks to Macy’s roaring success, more and more retailers then moved their advertising campaigns to the day after Thanksgiving.
The late 1950s are another landmark in the history of Black Friday as people were starting to call in sick after Thanksgiving. Because most stores were open, many of those people were using the free day to get a head start on their holiday shopping. But the first time the term was officially used was in 1966, by the Philadelphia Police Department. They used it to describe the shopping chaos at the local stores.
Although it had a negative connotation for a few years, companies quickly began adopting it. Since accountants use black to signify profit and red to signify loss, the name took off. To further boost profits, retailers started to offer discounts for that Friday alone. Nowadays, this day means profit for companies and price cuts for customers.
